Most Jaw Dropping Sequence
What you thought I was just going to drop best film in the middle of this shindig? Have you ever seen an awards program before/ heard the phrase “Saving the best for last.” We’ll get there don’t worry. Just chill.
Nominees: Alejandro Meets With a Man, (Sicario) Saving Mark Watney, (The Martian) Bear (The Revenant)
Intense sequences are those that both move you to the edge of your seat and make think you have no real idea what is going to happen next. These are the moments where you want to shout explicit words in the middle of the theater. The times where your jaw drops, you know what I’m saying.
Let’s get something straight, The Revenant might well be the rawest film I’ve ever seen in my life and Leonardo DiCaprio made me feel really squeamish as he battled for his very survival at the hands of a Grizzly bear. The battle is played out in what at least feels like a single take giving the audience no real reprieve from the horror and suffering being inflicted upon Hugh Glass, the films protagonist. Honestly I probably would have given this sequence the award if it wasn’t for the fact that the film doesn’t really ever take a break from being this raw showing of what a human can suffer through and survive and that leaves me with no real distinct moment where I can say, “That’s where my jaw dropped.”
The Martian is a film that throughout it’s first two acts or so is actually somewhat laid back, I mean there are definitely little moments of intensity like when the main character Mark Watney nearly blows himself up. However the rest of the time you feel rather at ease for taking the point of view of a man left on Mars. That is until the third act begins and you the viewer are given the best/worst example (depending on your point of view) of what exactly Murphy’s law is. To quote myself after exiting the theater after seeing The Martian, “I felt like I was actually on the edge of my seat for the last forty-five minutes.” and that is both the best part of The Martian and it’s ultimate downfall in this category since that makes it leaves me in the same position of not being able to pinpoint where my jaw dropped.
Sicario though, now this movie has lots of really intense scenes and sequences, but there is this single moment when Alejandro meets with another guy and the conversation is pretty intense, but then right out of left field something happens that just completely floored me. I said earlier that the Revenants sequence with the bear made me feel squeamish. This moment left me so stunned that I didn’t know how to feel about it. I absolutely won’t go into any details though since it could spoil what is definitely one of the best films of the year. Gah even just thinking back on it leaves me stunned that it actually happened in the movie. Benicio Del Toro’s performance in this movie is just so great.
Alright another award down, I think I’ve got maybe four more of these in the works so be on the lookout for Biggest Show Stealer, The Jar Jar Binks award for worst character, the Linkin Park award for trying so hard, (but in the end it doesn’t even matter!) and of course my favorite film of the year. Peace out everyone!
